Banner: The Miracle of the Snow and the Madonna in Glory

Ventura Salimbeni's processional banner, painted in 1610, is situated on the altar of the left chapel in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace. Painted on both sides, it depicts the Miracle of the Snow, which took place on 5th August (between 352 and 366) on the Esquiline, when snowfall was interpreted as divine indication of the site where a church should be built in honour of the Madonna and Pope Liberius. The perimeter of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore was outlined with a hoe following the miraculous event. The Madonna in Glory with Saint Sebastian and Saint Rocco are depicted on the other side of the banner.
