Chögyal Namkhai Norbu (b. Derge, 8 December 1938 – d. Arcidosso, 27 September 2018) was a teacher and researcher who, through his studies (over 250 publications), brought Tibetan civilization and culture to the world. He was also responsible for introducing Dzogchen (a very advanced system of deep meditation) to the West. Invited to Italy in 1959 by Professor Giuseppe Tucci, he worked at the Institute for the Middle and Far East in Rome, and then taught Tibetan and Mongolian language and literature at the Oriental University Institute in Naples
