Sassocolato Cave

Sassocolato Cave owes its name to the many beautiful concretions that descend along the inner walls of the cave. A natural cavity of tectonic-marine-karst origin, the cave is mainly linear, with some significant differences in height and steps in the tourist area. A large colony of 12 different species of bats (Chiroptera) inhabit the cave. To get to Sassocolato from the town of Castell’Azzara, simply follow the signs up to Poggio delle Forche, a spur of rock clearly visible from village, from where the mine is a 1-kilometer walk. The main entrance is located at an altitude of 900 meters above sea level, and the path through the mine winds through tunnels and caverns up to a depth of 30 meters.
