Azzolini Gate

Azzolini Gate is an entranceway into Seggiano through the medieval defensive walls that surround the village, its medieval stylistic features having largely been preserved. For defensive reasons, the gate is located at the top of a climb where the road bends into a tight curve, requiring any attackers with siege tools to move in tight, uncomfortable spaces. The workings of the door are on the inside of the gate, thus modifying its internal appearance while remaining hidden to the outside. The only thing visible externally are the recesses of the hinges, which are probably remodelled.
