The Church Santa Croce

The ancient church of Santa Croce stands near the remains of Semproniano’s fortress and dates back to the twelfth century. Built on a rectangular plan (but with irregular shapes) using local travertine in Romanesque shapes, the church’s walls have alternating black and white bands. On the main altar, accessed via a step from the floor of the nave and bordered by an iron balustrade, there is a medieval crucifix, in honour of which there are solemn celebrations every 25 years. Other elements of interest include the two travertine stoups, a small choir with cross vaults, and the altar of the Madonna Addolorata, which is set into the right wall of the presbytery.
