“Il Sasso” (The Rock)

The medieval village of Roccalbegna lies at the foot of an imposing rocky outcrop which is connected to Mount Labbro. Like an eagle's nest, the spur of rock rises towards the sky, the remains of the Aldobrandesca fortress perched on top guarding the valley at the confluence of the Armancione and Albegna rivers. From the ruins of the fortress at the top of the "Sasso", the eye is drawn towards the rooftops below, the wooded ridges, the cultivated fields and the grazing areas that creep into the underlying valley, until your eye gets lost in the Amiata massif. As a popular saying connected with the fragility of the territory goes: "If the Sasso cracks, say goodbye the fortress".
