Canvases by Francesco Vanni

Painted in 1589, the canvas by Francesco Vanni depicting the beheading of Saint John the Baptist is located on the first altar on the right of the Church of Saint Leonard. The painting is badly damaged, but the scene can still be appreciated in all its glory. It depicts the beheading in a dark prison, with the executioner offering the head of the John the Baptist on a silver platter, held by a Salome in the likeness of a child, under the watchful gaze of a lady-in-waiting and a soldier. Underneath Saint John’s body, there is a staff with a scroll wrapped around it which reads "Ecce Agnus Dei".
